What Is Homeopathy?

The name homeopathy, coined by its originator Samuel Hahnemann (a German physician), is derived from the Greek words for ‘similar suffering’ referring to the ‘like cures like’ principle of healing.

Homeopathy is a system of natural healthcare that has been in use for over 200 years. It is a well-established, holistic method of treatment that is widely used in countries such as Switzerland, France, Germany and Norway by millions of people including the Royal family. It is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the second largest therapeutic system in the world today.

Almost any ailment you take to a traditional doctor may be helped by homeopathy. The remedies can usually be taken alongside conventional treatments and prescription medication, as homeopathy works with your body to restore overall balance – relieving symptoms and promoting long-term good health.

People visit homeopaths with the following health problems:

Skin conditions, digestive problems, headaches, sinusitis, allergies, recurrent infections, joint pain/inflammation.

Hormonal imbalances – including infertility, PMS (PMT) problems during the menopause/teenage years, disorders of the metabolic system etc.

Emotional issue such as stress, depression, grief/loss, anxiety, fear or anger.

Exhaustion/fatigue, sleep disturbances, eating disorders, feeling run down or sometimes just knowing that something is not right.

In addition homeopathy can aid quick recovery in routine conditions such as day-to-day minor injuries (bruising, cuts, stings etc) and common colds, and coughs. It is also very beneficial to children/babies, can be taken safely during pregnancy and by nursing mothers.

How it works

Homeopathy is founded on two principles that assume that the body knows what it is doing and that symptoms are the body’s way of taking action to overcome illness. This healing response is automatic in living organisms; we term it the vital response. The similar medicine acts as a stimulus to the natural vital response, giving it the information it needs to complete its healing work, so disease is cured from within.

The second principle, that only ‘the minimum dose’ should be employed is based upon the understanding that the stimulus of the medicine works from within the vitality, so is not acting against the body’s workings and responses, but with it facilitating natural the self-healing processes. Only enough is administered to initiate the healing process, so homeopathic medicines given in minimum doses do not produce the marked side effects that can arise with other forms of treatment.

The holistic approach to health and well-being promotes the principle that all systems and parts of the body, mind and emotions work interactively with each other to make up the whole person.

Homeopathy works with your body’s own healing powers to bring about health and well being whilst treating the totality of symptoms at all levels of your being – emotional, mental and physical.

Homeopathically prepared remedies are gentle, subtle and powerful. Made from naturally occurring substances, they are non-addictive, free from artificially produced drugs and not tested on animals.

As with any treatment system, it is recommended that you consult a homeopath before using any homeopathic remedies, and insure that you maintain regular check-up’s whilst undertaking homeopathic treatment. In general, a homeopath trains intensively for a minimum of 4 years to gain professional qualification. They usually have already worked/studied in a health-related field prior to specializing in this discipline, and will have in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology.
